<div style="text-align: center;">I've received the first draft of exterior plans from <i>The Architects</i>! There's not a lot of creativity in these plans because this is where we're staying true to the Greek Revival style. Even though the porch was originally on the house, a rebuilt porch is considered "nonconforming" because of this closeness to the property line and I'm going to have to go before the Cambridge Zoning Board of Appeals. By staying historically true to the restoration, I can seek the support of the Historical Commission who can send a recommendation to the Zoning Board. It's kind of hard to see how the porch extends from the front of the house but you can see the outline of the new columns. The windows are being replaced with six over six double hung windows, the living room windows are being expanded (I'm not sure I'll do this), there's a new front door with sidelights and the wide corner boards have been replaced. Also note how there's no "siding" on the pediment (the triangular area around the attic window) and under the porch. Architects Hired

<div>I chose a local architect, a young-ish duo actually, to help me develop a phased plan for the house. I talked to a few architecture firms to find that they charged a percentage of the overall project cost. That could add up to a pretty hefty sum. I chose this firm because I felt like an hourly rate works better for me. I can use them as much or as little as I need...or I can afford. They will stay anonymous for now so I can reserve the right to badmouth them if I'd like. I'll refer to them as <i>The Architects</i>.</div><div><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I did a tour of the house with <i>The Architects,</i> talked about some of my ideas, and went through a bunch of my inspiration photos to talk about what I liked about them. That was an interesting process I'll talk about in another post. They've been back to take photos of every room, and measurements of every possible detail inside and out of the house. This took about three hours. All of the measurements will be put into their computers so we can start playing with layouts. It'll be fun to see what they come up with.</div><div><br /></div><div>I was a little discouraged to hear them say that an entire re-clad of the outside of a house can cost up to $100,000 in this neck of the woods. Picking an Architect

<div>I find the idea of using an architect a little intimidating. I don't want to build "Falling Water" or anything, I just need a little help restoring my front porch and maybe coming up with a few alternatives for modernizing my interior. So how do I go about choosing one?</div><div><br /></div><div>I was a big fan of "Cottage Living"--had to take a mental health day when I learned they were ceasing publication--but I distinctly remember a Greek Revival house right here in Cambridge that was renovated by a local architect. I remember it not only because it was local, I remember I looked up the architect--his name was Tittmann--to see where he lived so I could go see it in person. (Yes, I'm a house stalker!) And I remember because I drooled on myself when I was looking through the pages.</div><div><br /></div><div>So I googled "Tittmann Architect Cambridge" and found them. The firm name is Albert Righter & Tittmann and they're actually in Boston.
