margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzyx9kJ__DAmVMcf9fimtWf3o8wWmSYGyHoN6q-t2drkdgfSU93XJ4A6giWmWbTJ6vjaDAMz9lxWetmufIboqEHVciKW0Wt8VdXHoH49O_XjeBUoCprDePAoqQ-y_8byeaMNXMapibsCPr/s1600/IMG_2716.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />A couple of months ago we made a resolution to make Sundays a real day of rest.  Sundays used to be filled with projects, laundry, fresh sheets and cleaning - which used to work, pre-Emma.  When it was just Mike, Mr. Darcy and me, getting all of those things done on Sunday used to feel good, then we would curl up on the sofa, have a cozy dinner and watch TV.  With Emma, trying to accomplish those things all in one day + have a relaxing dinner, is just crazy.   <br /><br />The original goal was to get everything fresh and clean ready for the week ahead, but instead we were just wearing ourselves out and feeling overwhelmed at the end of the weekend.  When we tried, we would take turns playing with Emma while the other ran around trying to be productive, then we switched.  We were exhausted at the end of the day, only about half of our projects were half-started (mostly more messes made), and the worst part of all - Emma didn't have much fun either.  The old method just wasn't working.  It took me a while to realize this... almost 22 months.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKChd4KTs0f7cWYl3wGXoBOQ-BJ0P8_N6CBB0HEhJFVU-aDUBUQy20OxhSEBBr7boVQs2XyIXPJ1Y-NxkiDyIr3RgWxJwLBbqrpdyQrIQldihn03ASsnSn-XGGjeEXTecHCdwA7YSAKhVm/s1600/IMG_2703.jpg" width="476" /></a></div>So, we've changed our ways.  Instead of waiting for Sunday to get the house tidy, we do it on Friday (or Saturday morning, if I have to work on Friday).  Laundry, cleaning, target trip, etc.  We try to have fun with it - Target/Starbucks trip in the morning, then lounge around in the living room and play while we fold laundry, and I do most of the heavy cleaning while she naps in the afternoon.  Since we rarely have dinner at home on Friday, there is no dinner to prepare, and I try to have everything done when she wakes up from her nap so we can go on a walk or go to the park.<br /><br />I love that the house is clean and ready for the weekend - leaving us with an open agenda to take fun adventures or just lounge around and play.  <br /><br />As a project-aholic, it took me awhile to really get on board and not plan any project for Sunday.  It is so tempting to try to get things done that I think will make our house "feel good," but it was really was going against the true goals I have for our family.  With Emma in our lives, we've discovered we don't get as much pleasure from completing those projects as we do spending no-stress, relaxing time with her.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgA-b5gbNyxmB67DWZk-8M0GAjxAdrzZNw2yNSRFolC6UieKsls9-l4J7eqQH0KIBaMr9JflewOFFTRPjB-9ri0l7aOP3f9LlXn2UsI-vUsxJuhflFeIQ8-AFwEcmYOlg_ErOUOEWCFn-F/s1600/IMG_2663.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; Real Entertaining | A Dinner Party featuring East Hampton Hedge

float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhux8IkCr2pR62iR9_0593kRpXY6WjateZRqGTzDbd5KflYEbaL0k2kBvbKXOOZrFeC4U0JYWu2FezX8uRedr9Zq2V3eCaAIIzr5Z6fg-MzT56JsVS0UQqBr02F9yPkFGbN_oLPxBRinPA/s400/IMG_1382.jpg" width="265" /></a>I also recently found out that one of my neighbors mothers is a famous designer... seriously.  We walked down to their house one evening (with our own half-opened bottle of wine) so Emma could play with their boys, and I find myself having a drink with someone that is regularly mentioned in Elle Decor, House Beautiful, etc.  She was fabulous - I was picking her brain for her favorite paint colors (Ben Moore, White, of course) and recommendations on everything I could think of.<br /><br />The style of entertaining for neighborhood friends is the sort of entertaining I love.  When you think of having the neighbors over, it is casual, unpretentious and relaxed.  We often get together with our friends, Annie & George, for dinner.   It tends to works better for us to have them over to our house because we after Emma mingles for a little bit and we have cocktails, then we can put her to bed and enjoy a leisurely adult dinner.  Which for me means I can eat dinner with out someone sitting on my lap - or taking everyone's napkins off their laps and putting them back in the linen drawer... currently her favorite mealtime activity.<br /><br />Obviously, I'm more than happy to host, but Annie & George always graciously like to contribute to the meal, since we're not always available to go to their house for dinner.  The last time they came over George made his famous Peach Cobbler.  It was unbelievable.  Unbelievable.  This weekend they brought a smoked chicken that he'd rubbed with a mesquite seasoning that was also soooo delicious.  You can see why I'm happy to have them contribute to the meal!   Here is our menu for the night - I'll be sharing the recipes later this week.<br /><br />Menu :<br /><br />Homemade Salted Soft Pretzels with Mustard & Cheese<br />Annie & George's Smoked Chicken<br />Heirloom Tomatoes with Homemade Ranch Dressing<br />Cauliflower Gratin with White Cheddar & Parmesan<br />Pesto & Peas Pasta Salad<br /><a href="http://jennysteffens.blogspot.com/2013/09/georges-famous-peach-and-blueberry.html">George's Famous Peach (and Blueberry) Cobbler</a><br /><br />So, they brought the chicken and I made sides and dessert.  Dividing up the menu is such a fun (and easy) way to entertain because everyone gets to contribute and feel a part of it... instead of one person running around exhausting themselves.  I used to shy away from letting guests bring anything, but after hosting my <a href="http://jennysteffens.blogspot.com/2013/02/a-barefoot-contessa-dinner-party-last.html">Barefoot Contessa Party in January</a> (we all fixed something from her new cookbook), I learned how much more festive it can be - especially when you get together with the same crew on a regular basis.  It gives everyone something to be excited about... and lets the hostess concentrate on fun details like the table setting - something that can get overlooked when you have a really long to-do list.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFRZBOePZ-TWlD6syhkHRgUAbdkA_eTA3GTEkG23AZ_NRpB_bDemYBMhyphenhyphen6zC8bdROlUTISwiYDR94eZbLEWmFHH7MrO1Szuo505iYRJpq_qIUPIU-chJuB2iFJQ3m-ovZtoobg4Fsc5z0/s1600/IMG_1403.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; Summer Dinner Party Menu
