I had a little bit of trouble convincing Mike that this would look good... "Grass in between bricks?  What?"  But, we are so happy with the end result.   Here's how we got there...

When we first moved in, this is what our back yard looked like.  Ick.  The previous owners had placed these strange stepping stones EVERYWHERE.  There were huge patches of bare ground, and the flower beds were not well defined.  The biggest problem?  There was no place for us to relax, put a table or a grill.
Here we are midway through the project.  Mike had removed all of the grass from the 22 ft. x 16 ft. area and tilled it to loosen the ground, then leveled it with a shovel.  It was quite the project.  We laid 9 x 9 cobblestones 2 inches apart, with the help of a 2x4 to keep them straight.  Around the cobbles, we laid a red brick border to make a nice clean, defined area.  After 'grouting' with topsoil, we seeded the patio (which seems strange), and then waited... and about two weeks later...
We had grass!  And patio furniture.
We planted a boxwood border (about 24 plants) to enclose the patio and give it an intimate feeling.  In about two years, we should have a true boxwood hedge surrounding our bricks.

Check out the patio in action at our House Warming Clambake!
